02How to approach the GSX-S1000
The GSX-S1000 gives you compression and rebound at both ends — enough to fix almost any handling complaint without touching springs.
- Compression controls how fast the suspension collapses under load; rebound controls how fast it returns. Most riders over-damp rebound chasing a compression problem.
- There's no high-speed circuit here, so kerb harshness and braking dive share one adjuster at each end. If a bump fix ruins your braking feel, the fix is usually pressure or sag, not the clicker.
- Work front and rear as a pair. Changing only one end moves the bike's balance as much as it changes the symptom.
03Where to start — the baseline
Whatever the GSX-S1000 offers, the order of operations is always the same. Start from the OEM clicker baseline (count every adjuster from fully closed), set tyre pressures, then set sag before you touch a single damping clicker.
- Tyre pressure first.It moves the chassis more than any clicker. Start from a known cold target — see the track day tyre pressure guide.
- Then sag. On a naked / streetfighter machine, aim for roughly 35–40 mm of front rider sag and 30–35 mm at the rear, then verify against the manual. Full method in the sag guide.

04What you can't tune on the GSX-S1000
Knowing where the GSX-S1000stops adjusting saves more time than any clicker chart. These are the fixes this bike can’t make with a screwdriver — and what to reach for instead:
- Single-speed damping circuits — one adjuster covers both rider inputs and sharp bumps, so expect to compromise between the two.
05Match the symptom to the adjuster
On the GSX-S1000, as on any bike, diagnose by the corner phase where the problem shows up — not the symptom alone. Ordered by what this bike can actually act on:
- Running Wide — A motorcycle that runs wide on entry is a different problem from one that runs wide on exit. Diagnose by corner phase and find the adjuster that fixes it.
